Early Life and Music Dreams
Growing Up in New York
Edward Joseph Mahoney was born in Manhattan, New York City, on March 21, 1949. He came from a big family with Irish roots. His dad was a police officer, and his mom stayed home to take care of the family. Eddie grew up in Levittown, New York. He also spent some of his teenage years in Woodhaven, Queens.
Eddie loved music from a young age. He started singing on the streets when he was just eleven. As a teenager, he played in rock bands. He even got kicked out of one high school for changing his report card grades. In 1967, he finished high school at Island Trees High School.
Choosing Music Over Police Work
When he was 18, Eddie thought about becoming a police officer. His grandfather, father, and brother were all police officers. But after working as a clerk for a short time, he decided to follow his dream of music in 1968. The police department did not allow long hair, and Eddie wanted to keep his. He later said he couldn't see himself in a police uniform for 20 years. His bandmates also didn't want a police officer in their group. His father was not happy with his choice and even tore down his Jimi Hendrix posters.
In 1968, Eddie moved to Berkeley, California. There, he worked with a vocal coach named Judy Davis. He changed his name to Eddie Money. He dropped some letters from his last name and joked about always being broke. Some people even called him "Eddie no money."

After a less successful album in 1983, Eddie Money made a big comeback in 1986. His album Can't Hold Back sold over a million copies. The song "Take Me Home Tonight" from this album became a huge hit. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Eddie agreed to sing the song only if Ronnie Spector (from The Ronettes) sang a special line in it. In 1987, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for this song. Other songs from the album, "I Wanna Go Back" and "Endless Nights," also did very well.
