Edelmiro Julián Farrell Plaul (born February 12, 1887 – died October 21, 1980) was an important Argentine general. He served as the de facto (meaning he was in charge, but not elected by the people) President of Argentina from 1944 to 1946.
Farrell played a big role in Argentina's history. He helped his assistant, Juan Perón, rise in government. This opened the way for Perón's later political career.

Early Life and Family Roots
Edelmiro Julián Farrell was born in 1887 in Villa de los Industriales, which is in Lanús, Buenos Aires. He was the tenth child of Juan C. Farrell and Catalina Plaul. His grandfather, Matthew Farrell, came from County Longford in Ireland. His family, the Farrell clan, were once known as Lords of Annaly in Ireland.
Military Career Journey
Farrell started his military path in 1907. He graduated from the Argentine military school as an infantry sub-lieutenant. This is a junior officer rank.
Between 1924 and 1926, he served in an Italian alpine regiment. After this experience, he returned to Argentina.
Rising Through the Ranks
In 1943, there was a military takeover in Argentina. The military took control of the government. After this event, Farrell was promoted to brigadier general. This is a higher rank in the army.
He then became the Vice-President of the military government. General Pedro Pablo Ramírez was the president at that time. Ramírez had removed the previous president, Arturo Rawson. Farrell also held the position of Minister of War. During this time, Farrell appointed Juan Perón as his secretary.
Becoming President of Argentina
On February 25, 1944, General Ramírez named Farrell as the new president. Farrell then appointed Juan Perón as his Vice-President.
Perón's Influence and New Elections
By 1945, Juan Perón had become very popular. Many people supported him through public demonstrations. This made Perón the most powerful person in the government.
Because of Perón's growing influence, Farrell announced that presidential elections would be held in 1946. Juan Perón ran in these elections and was chosen by the people to be the next president. On June 4, 1946, Farrell stepped down. Juan Perón, who had once been a colonel under Farrell's command, became the new president.
Argentina Joins World War II
Towards the end of World War II, Argentina faced pressure from other countries. After the Inter-American Conference on Problems of War and Peace, Argentina decided to join the Allies. On March 27, 1945, President Farrell officially declared war on Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan.
