Edward Cheeseman (who died in 1509), also known as Cheseman, was an English lawyer and important government worker from Middlesex. He lived during the time of King Henry VII.

Edward Cheeseman was born around 1455. His family became well-known because of him. He had two younger brothers named John and Robert. Edward became a very successful lawyer and worked for the King.

Edward's Early Life and Family History

While there was a William Cheeseman living in Southall in 1382, Edward was the one who really made the family famous. He was born in the mid-1400s.

Edward's Important Career

Edward Cheeseman started his career in law. He first worked as a filacer, which meant he helped prepare important legal documents called writs. Later, he became a skilled attorney in a major court called the Court of King's Bench.

Working for King Henry VII

Edward's most important job was working for King Henry VII. After September 1505, he became the Cofferer of the Household. This was a senior role in the King's royal household, meaning he managed the King's money and expenses.

Edward was present at King Henry VII's funeral in April 1509. Sadly, Edward himself passed away just a few months later in August 1509. He asked to be buried in the Blackfriars church in London.

Edward's Wealth and Land

Edward Cheeseman's will was officially approved in November 1510. He left a lot of land and property to his son. These lands were in Middlesex and Kent.

In Middlesex, he owned the manor and large house called Dormanswell in Southall. He also bought the manor of Southall in 1496. Other lands he owned in Middlesex included the manor of Norwood, and the manors of Osterley and Wyke. In Kent, he had land in places like Sundridge, Chevening, and Lewisham.

Edward's Family Life

Before 1485, Edward Cheeseman married Joan Lawrence, who was from Lancashire. They had six children together:

  • Eleanor
  • Mary, who married two times. Her first husband was Mr. Catesby from Bedfordshire, and her second was a lawyer named John Tawe.
  • Grace, who is said to have married a person who looked after Windsor Forest.
  • Elizabeth I, who married Thomas Carminow (who died in 1529). He was a Gentleman Usher for the King. Elizabeth I was the mother of John Carminow and Nicholas Carminow. After Thomas died, she married Edward Cleker.
  • Elizabeth II (who died after 1547), who became a nun. She lived first at Holywell Priory and later at Kilburn.

After Edward died, his wife Joan married John Banester. She passed away in 1536.
