Early Life and Military Service

Edward Hill was born on April 13, 1835, in a small place called Liberty, New York. When the American Civil War began, he joined the Union Army. This army fought to keep the United States together.

Hill became an officer and served with the 16th Michigan Infantry. He was a captain in Company K. His unit was part of many important battles during the war.

A Hero at Cold Harbor

One of Edward Hill's most heroic moments happened on June 1, 1864. This was during the fierce Battle of Cold Harbor in Virginia. Captain Hill was leading his company. They were part of a group called the brigade skirmish line.

During the battle, Hill led a very dangerous charge. They ran directly towards the enemy's hidden cannons. These cannons were called "masked batteries." Hill and his men charged right up to the very muzzles of the guns. This means they got extremely close to the enemy. During this incredibly brave act, Captain Hill was badly wounded.

The Medal of Honor

Even though he was severely injured, Edward Hill survived his wounds. He continued to serve and eventually rose in rank. He became a lieutenant colonel.

For his amazing bravery at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Edward Hill was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is the highest military award given by the United States. It recognizes soldiers who show extreme courage "above and beyond the call of duty." Hill received this special award on December 4, 1893.
