As a football player for Tufts University in 1916, Ted faced some tough challenges. During a game against Princeton, he was injured due to unfair play from opposing players.

Later that season, his team traveled for a game at Indiana University. The hotel where the team planned to stay initially refused to give rooms to Ted and another Black teammate. Tufts coach Charles Whelan stood up for his players. He told the hotel that if his Black players weren't allowed to stay, he would take the entire team back to Massachusetts.
