Sir Egerton Bushe Coghill (born February 7, 1853 – died October 9, 1921) was a talented Irish painter. He is known for his beautiful landscape paintings. Many of his artworks show the stunning scenery of County Cork, Ireland.

Egerton Coghill's Life and Family

Egerton Coghill was born on February 7, 1853, in a place called Castletownshend in County Cork, Ireland. His father, Sir John Joscelyn Coghill, was also an Irish painter.

Egerton had an older brother named Nevill Coghill. Nevill was a very brave soldier who received the Victoria Cross award. The well-known Irish writer, Edith Anna Somerville, was Egerton's cousin.

Egerton first studied engineering at a school called Haileybury School in England. Later, he decided to follow his passion for art instead.

His Family

Egerton Coghill married Elizabeth Somerville. She was the sister of his cousin, Edith Somerville. They had several children.

His oldest son, Marmaduke Coghill, became a soldier. He fought in both World War I and World War II. Another son, Nevill Coghill, became a professor at Oxford University. His younger son, Ambrose Coghill, became an actor.

Egerton Coghill passed away on October 9, 1921, while visiting England. He was first buried in Twickenham. However, in 1923, his body was brought back to Ireland. He was reburied in St Barrahane's churchyard in his hometown of Castletownshend.

Egerton Coghill's Art Career

Egerton Coghill left his engineering career to become an artist. He studied art in different places. He went to Düsseldorf in Germany and the Académie Julian in Paris, France.

From 1883 to 1884, he lived in a village called Barbizon near Fontainebleau. This area was famous for its landscape painters. After that, he traveled to England. There, he joined a group of artists called the New English Art Club.

Coghill showed his paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Ireland many times. He also exhibited his work at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions in the Walker Art Gallery. After leaving Paris in 1884, he returned to his home in Castletownshend.

He showed his work only once at the Paris Salon in 1886. He never exhibited his paintings at the famous Royal Academy of Arts in London. Many of his paintings feature the beautiful landscapes of County Cork. Egerton Coghill was not interested in being famous or competing with other artists. Because of this, he did not show his work very often.

Where to See His Art

Today, you can find examples of Egerton Coghill's work in several art galleries. The Crawford Art Gallery in Ireland has some of his paintings. The National Gallery of Ireland also holds his artwork. The Ashmolean Museum in England has a collection of his pieces too.

In 1964, the Ashmolean Museum held a special exhibition of his work. They displayed 73 of his paintings. The next year, a smaller exhibition was held in London at the Alpine Club gallery.

To honor his memory, the "Egerton Coghill Landscape Prize" was created. This prize is given at the University of Oxford to talented landscape artists.
