Early Life and Family Boxing
Egerton Marcus was born in a place called Goed Fortuin in British Guiana (now Guyana). He was the third of five children. His mother, Joyce Fraser, was also a boxer!
In 1973, when Egerton was eight, his family moved to Canada. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario. Boxing seems to run in his family. His uncle, Charles Amos, boxed for Guyana in the 1968 Olympics. His cousin, Troy Amos-Ross, also competed in the Olympics in 1996 and 2000.
Amateur Boxing Career
Before becoming a professional, Egerton was an amateur boxer. This means he competed for fun and experience, not for money. He represented Canada at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. He won a silver medal in the middleweight division.
Here's how he did at the Olympics:
- He had a "bye" in the first round, meaning he didn't have to fight.
- He defeated Emmanuel Legaspi from the Philippines by knockout in the first round.
- He defeated Darko Dukić from Yugoslavia by knockout in the second round.
- He won against Sven Ottke from West Germany with a score of 5-0.
- He defeated Hussain Shah Syed from Pakistan with a score of 4-1.
- In the final match, he lost to Henry Maske from East Germany with a score of 0-5, earning the silver medal.
Professional Boxing Career
Egerton Marcus became a professional boxer in 1989. He started his career very strong, winning his first fourteen fights in a row! One of his big wins was against former Olympian Andrew Maynard.
In 1995, he fought Henry Maske again, this time for a world title (the IBF Light Heavyweight Title). Unfortunately, he lost that match. After this, his career had some ups and downs. He retired from boxing in 2001. However, he made a comeback in 2007 for one last fight, which he won.
Life After Boxing
After his boxing career, Egerton Marcus became a member of ACTRA. This is a group for people who work in Canadian movies, TV, and radio.
He also used to run his own boxing gym in Toronto called The Egerton Marcus Boxing Academy. Even though the gym closed in 2006, he still helps train young amateur boxers.
