Egerton Marcus is a Canadian former boxer who was born on February 2, 1965. He is famous for winning a silver medal in boxing at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. He competed as a professional boxer from 1989 to 2007.

Growing Up and Family Connections

Egerton Marcus grew up in a family of boxers! He was the third of five children. His mother, Joyce Fraser, was also a boxer in Guiana.

He was born in Goed Fortuin, British Guiana. In 1973, when he was eight years old, his family moved to Canada. He was raised in Toronto, Ontario.

Boxing runs in his family. His uncle, Charles Amos, competed for Guyana in the 1968 Summer Olympics. His first cousin, Troy Amos-Ross, also competed in boxing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Amateur Boxing Career

Before turning professional, Egerton Marcus had a very successful amateur career. He represented Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. There, he won the silver medal in the middleweight boxing division.

Here's how he did at the Olympics:

  • He had a bye in the first round, meaning he didn't have to fight.
  • He won against Emmanuel Legaspi from the Philippines by knockout in the first round.
  • He defeated Darko Dukić from Yugoslavia by knockout in the second round.
  • He won against Sven Ottke from West Germany with a score of 5-0.
  • He defeated Hussain Shah Syed from Pakistan with a score of 4-1.
  • In the final match, he lost to Henry Maske from East Germany with a score of 0-5, earning him the silver medal.

Professional Boxing Career

Egerton Marcus started his professional boxing career in 1989. He had an amazing start, winning his first fourteen fights in a row! One of his notable wins was a tough fight against former Olympian Andrew Maynard.

In February 1995, he got a chance to fight for a major title. He challenged Henry Maske for the IBF Light Heavyweight Title. Maske was the same boxer who had beaten him in the Olympics. Egerton lost this fight by a decision after 12 rounds.

After this title fight, his career became a bit more challenging. He later lost a fight to Donovan Ruddock in the heavyweight division. Egerton first retired from boxing in 2001. However, he made a comeback in 2007 and won a fight against Carl Gathright.

Life After Boxing

After his boxing career, Egerton Marcus became a member of ACTRA. This is a group for Canadian actors and performers.

He also used to run his own boxing gym in Toronto called The Egerton Marcus Boxing Academy. He closed the gym in 2006, but he still helps train young amateur boxers.
