Eggbuckland is a part of the city of Plymouth in Devon, England. It used to be a small village. Before the Second World War, Eggbuckland was just a few miles north of Plymouth. After the war, Plymouth grew a lot. New neighborhoods were built around the old village. Now, the whole area is known as Eggbuckland. The A38 road was built nearby in the 1980s. This made Eggbuckland a popular place for people who travel to work.

Discovering Eggbuckland

A Look Back in Time

Eggbuckland has a very old history. Its name comes from Saxon words. "Bocheland" meant "Royal land held by charter." This was land given by the king. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded this area. It said the land was held by King William of Normandy. But he gave it to a Saxon named Heche or Ecca. So, it became known as Heche or Ecca's Bocheland.

There was a Saxon church here long ago. The current church, St Edward's, was built in 1470. During the English Civil War, Eggbuckland was held by the Royalist Cavaliers. They fought against the Parliamentarian Roundheads. The village was badly damaged during this time.

What's in a Name?

Over many years, the name "Bocheland" changed. By 1685, people called it "Egg Buckland." Then, by 1902, it became one word: Eggbuckland. You might still see the older name used sometimes around Plymouth.

Old Forts and Defenses

In the 1800s, new forts were built around Plymouth. These were called Palmerston Forts. They were part of a defense line to protect the city from attacks from the north. Many of these old structures are still there today. However, they are now privately owned. They are used for different things, not for defense anymore.

Eggbuckland Today

In 1931, the area of Egg Buckland had about 2,494 people living there. In 1939, it became part of Plymouth and Bickleigh.

Today, Eggbuckland is home to schools. These include Eggbuckland Community College and several primary schools.
