Eglisau is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Zürich, within the Bülach district. Eglisau is known for its beautiful location along the Rhine river.

Exploring Eglisau's Past
Eglisau was first mentioned way back in 892. Back then, it was just a few separate farmhouses called Ouwa. Over time, its name changed a few times, like Owe in 1238 and ze Eglisowe in 1352.
This town became important because of its location. It sits where two big travel routes crossed. Being on both sides of the Rhine river meant it could control boat traffic. There was also a bridge here, which was key for people traveling north and south. Because of this important spot, Eglisau became a market town. It was also home to a special officer called a Landvogt, who was appointed by Zürich.

Eglisau covers an area of about 9.1 square kilometers (about 3.5 square miles). A big part of this land, about 35.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover another large part, about 41.3%. The rest of the land includes buildings, roads (15.9%), and natural areas like rivers (7.4%).
The town is right on the banks of the Rhine river. For a long time, it has been a very important place to cross the river. Eglisau is made up of different parts. On the right side of the river are areas like Städtli, Burg, Steig, and Wiler. On the left side, you'll find Seglingen, which includes a small village called Tössriedern.

Getting Around Eglisau
Eglisau has good ways to travel. You can take trains to nearby cities like Schaffhausen and Zürich. There are also regular boat services on the river to other villages.
The Eglisau railway station is a stop for the Zürich S-Bahn train lines S9 and S36. You can reach Zürich Hauptbahnhof (Zürich Main Station) in about 31 minutes by train. Another station, Hüntwangen-Wil railway station, is partly in Eglisau and is also served by the S9 line. Between these two stations, the train line crosses the impressive Eglisau railway bridge over the Rhine river.
