Eightmile is a historic place located in White Pine County, Nevada. It sits within the Goshute Indian Reservation right next to Spring Creek. Today, Eightmile is mostly known as a "ghost town" because many of its original buildings are gone, but it has a very interesting past.

A Look Back at Eightmile's History

Eightmile has played several important roles throughout history, especially as a key stop for travelers and mail carriers.

The Pony Express and Stagecoach Stop

Long ago, Eightmile was first known as Eight Mile Station. It was an important stop on the famous Pony Express route. Imagine brave riders on horseback carrying mail across the country at top speed! This station helped them rest and switch horses.

Later, Eightmile became a stagecoach station. Stagecoaches were like large horse-drawn buses that carried people, mail, and goods across Nevada. This route was super important because it connected the western parts of the country to the east before trains were common.

A Time of Conflict

In 1863, there was a conflict involving the Goshute people, led by White Horse, and the station. The station was burned, and this event marked the beginning of what is known as the Goshute War.

During the American Civil War and later the Snake War, soldiers from the Union Army and then the U. S. Army often stayed at Eightmile Station. They helped protect this important travel route. Keeping the route open was vital for connecting the western states and territories to the eastern part of the country. This was especially true before the transcontinental railroad was finished in 1869.

Later Years and Today

In the 1900s, a sheep ranch was started at Eightmile. Also, the famous Lincoln Highway, one of America's first cross-country roads, passed right through Eightmile on its way from Ibapah, Utah to Ely, Nevada.

In 1938, the U.S. Government bought the land at Eightmile. This land was then set aside for the use of the Goshute people.

A place called the Georgetta Ranch is also located nearby and is sometimes referred to as Eightmile.

Today, Eightmile appears to be the location of a private home.
