Eike Heinrich Immel (born 27 November 1960) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper for many years. His career lasted from 1975 until 1997.

He played for famous clubs like Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart, and Manchester City. Eike also played for the West Germany national team. He was part of their squads for the 1982 FIFA World Cup and 1986 FIFA World Cup. He also played in the UEFA Euro 1980 and UEFA Euro 1988 tournaments.

After he stopped playing football, Eike Immel became a coach. He managed VfR Heilbronn for three years. Later, he worked as a goalkeeping coach for teams like Beşiktaş, Austria Wien, and Fenerbahçe. Immel holds a record in the Bundesliga (Germany's top league). He conceded the most goals as a goalkeeper, with 829 goals in 534 games.

Playing Career: Club Highlights

Eike Immel was a top youth goalkeeper for West Germany in 1978. He became the main goalkeeper for Borussia Dortmund when he was just seventeen. He stayed with Dortmund until 1986.

Moving to VfB Stuttgart

In 1986, he moved to VfB Stuttgart. This transfer cost two million Deutsche Mark. It was the highest fee ever paid for a goalkeeper in German football at that time. He played as Stuttgart's regular goalkeeper for nine years.

During his time at Stuttgart, he achieved great success. He helped the team win the Bundesliga title in 1992. He also earned a runner-up medal in the UEFA Cup in 1989.

Time at Manchester City

After Stuttgart, he joined Manchester City. He played there until he retired at the end of the 1996–97 season. Overall, Eike Immel played 534 matches in Germany's top football league.

Playing Career: International Matches

Eike Immel played for the West Germany national team for eight years. He decided to stop playing for the national team after the EURO '88 tournament.

Becoming the Main Goalkeeper

He had been the starting goalkeeper since 1987. His 19th and final game for his country was in the semi-final of the 1988 UEFA European Football Championship. This game took place in Hamburg.

By retiring early, he missed out on being part of the team that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Bodo Illgner then became the starting goalkeeper for that winning team.

Regrets and Achievements

The 1988 UEFA European Championship was Immel's fifth big international tournament. He later said that his decision to retire from international games at only 28 was too quick. He made this choice because of the competition from Bodo Illgner. Despite this, he was part of the squad that won the 1980 UEFA European Championship.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Eike Immel started coaching. He joined VfR Heilbronn in 1998. He managed this team until 2001.

Since then, he has worked as a goalkeeping coach. He notably worked under coach Christoph Daum at Fenerbahçe in 2005. He also coached goalkeepers at Beşiktaş and Austria Wien.
