Bodo Illgner was born in Koblenz, Germany. He grew up playing football in the youth teams of 1. FC Köln. He joined their main team when he was almost 19 years old. His first game in the Bundesliga (Germany's top football league) was in February 1986.

From the 1987–88 season, Bodo became the main goalkeeper for 1. FC Köln. He was even voted the Best European Goalkeeper in 1991. He played for Köln for many years, showing off his great skills.

Moving to Real Madrid

On August 30, 1996, Bodo Illgner moved to Real Madrid, a huge club in Spain. In his first year, he played 40 games in La Liga (Spain's top football league). He helped Real Madrid win the national championship that season.

The next year, he briefly lost his spot as the main goalkeeper. But he got it back just in time for the UEFA Champions League final. He helped Real Madrid win that important match against Juventus FC.

Later, a young goalkeeper named Iker Casillas took over his spot. Bodo then decided to retire from football. In 2013, a famous Spanish newspaper, Marca, named him one of the "Best foreign eleven in Real Madrid's history".

International Career

Playing for Germany

Bodo Illgner first played for the West Germany national team in September 1987. This was in a friendly game against Denmark. He was also part of the team for UEFA Euro 1988.

Winning the World Cup

At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Bodo was the main goalkeeper for Germany. He played incredibly well. In the semi-final, he saved a penalty shot against England. This helped his team reach the final.

In the final match against Argentina, Bodo kept a "clean sheet." This means he didn't let any goals in. Germany won the game 1–0, becoming World Cup champions!

Bodo played 54 games for his country in total. He also played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He surprisingly retired from international football after that tournament, even though he was only 27 years old.
