Playing for Clubs
Starting at 1. FC Köln
Bodo Illgner was born in Koblenz, Germany, on April 7, 1967. He started playing football in the youth system of 1. FC Köln. He made his first professional appearance in the Bundesliga (Germany's top football league) on February 22, 1986. He was not yet 19 years old at that time.
From the 1987–88 season, Bodo became the main goalkeeper for 1. FC Köln. He took over from another famous goalkeeper, Harald Schumacher. In 1991, he was even named the Best European Goalkeeper.
Moving to Real Madrid
On August 30, 1996, Bodo Illgner joined the famous Spanish club Real Madrid. In his first year, he played 40 matches in La Liga (Spain's top league). He helped Real Madrid win the national championship that season.
In the next season, he briefly lost his starting spot to Santiago Cañizares. However, Bodo got his place back in time for the 1998 UEFA Champions League final. Real Madrid won that important match against Juventus FC by a score of 1–0.
Later, in the 1999–2000 season, a young 18-year-old goalkeeper named Iker Casillas started playing more. Bodo Illgner retired from football after the 2000–01 season. In 2013, a Spanish newspaper called Marca named him one of the best foreign players in Real Madrid's history.
Playing for His Country
West Germany National Team
Bodo Illgner first played for the West Germany national team on September 23, 1987. It was a friendly match against Denmark, which West Germany won 1–0. He was a backup goalkeeper during the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament.
Winning the World Cup
At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Bodo Illgner was the main goalkeeper for West Germany. He played incredibly well during the tournament. In the semi-final match, he saved a penalty kick from England's Stuart Pearce during a penalty shootout. This helped his team reach the final.
In the final match against Argentina, Bodo Illgner kept a "clean sheet." This means he did not let Argentina score any goals. West Germany won the match 1–0, becoming the World Cup champions! Bodo was the first goalkeeper ever to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup final.
Overall, Bodo Illgner played 54 times for his country. He also played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He surprisingly retired from international football after the quarter-final loss to Bulgaria, even though he was only 27 years old.
