History of TU/e
The Eindhoven University of Technology was started by the Dutch government. It opened on June 23, 1956. Back then, it was called Technische Hogeschool Eindhoven (THE). It was the second university of its kind in the Netherlands. The first was the Delft University of Technology.
Until 2002, students studied for four or five years to get an engineering degree. After 2002, the university changed its system. It now has a three-year bachelor's degree and a two-year master's degree. This change made it similar to many other universities around the world.
Plans for the Future
In 2011, the university shared its "Strategic Plan 2020." This plan aimed to make the university even better. It included creating a University College for engineering. They also planned to have more students and PhD graduates. The university wanted to use its research more in real-world projects. They also aimed to be among the top 100 universities globally. The campus was also improved, adding a science park.
How TU/e is Organized
TU/e is a public university in the Netherlands. Its structure is set by Dutch law. The university has different groups that help it run smoothly.
Who Runs the University?
The university is managed by an Executive Board. This board makes sure all departments and services work well. The board includes a president, a rector, and a vice president. The rector is in charge of the university's academic side. The current president is Koen Janssen. The rector is Silvia Lenaerts.
Who Watches Over the Board?
Two groups keep an eye on the Executive Board:
- The Supervisory Board has five outside members. They check how the university is run. They also approve big decisions like the budget.
- The University Council has 18 members. Half are staff, and half are students. They give advice to the Executive Board. They also make sure there is no unfair treatment at the university.
Departments and Services
Most of the university's work happens in its departments and service organizations. These groups have staff and students who help run them.
The departments are where most of the teaching and research takes place. Each department is led by a dean. The deans meet regularly with the rector.
The service organizations help with other important tasks. They make sure the university runs smoothly every day.
Here are some of the service organizations:
Organization | What it's called | What it does |
---|---|---|
DAZ | General Affairs Service | Handles general tasks, alumni, and the Student Sport Center. |
CEC | Communications Expertise Center | Manages all university communications, including talking to the news. |
DPO | Human Resources Management | Takes care of staff matters like jobs, pensions, and safety. |
DFEZ | Financial and Economic Services | Manages all the university's money. |
DH | Housing service | Manages all university buildings and properties. |
ICT | ICT Service | Manages computers, networks, and internet for the university. |
IEC | Information Expertise Center | Runs the university library, both physical and online. |
DIZ | Internal Affairs Service | Handles internal services like emergency help and buying supplies. |
STU | Student Service Center | Helps students with admissions, registration, and information. |
GTD | Common Technical Service | Provides technical help, like building prototypes for research. |
TU/e Holding B.V.
TU/e also has a company called TU/e Holding B.V. This company manages the university's business interests. It handles agreements with outside companies and investments in new companies started by university research.

Eindhoven University of Technology is known as a top technical university in Europe. In 2003, a European report ranked TU/e as third among European research universities. This was based on how much its scientific research was used. It was tied with TU Munich.
What You Can Study
The university has different departments, also called faculties. These are the main groups that teach students and do research. They have most of the academic staff.
TU/e also offers PhD programs for students who have a master's degree. In these programs, students work as researchers to earn their PhD.

TU/e has nine main departments:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Built Environment
- Electrical Engineering
- Industrial Design
- Chemical Engineering and Chemistry
- Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences
- Applied Physics
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mathematics and Computer Science
Special Programs
The university has special "honors programs" for talented students. These programs offer more in-depth study for bachelor's students. For master's students, they focus on leadership and professional skills.
Postgraduate Doctorate of Engineering (PDEng)
Since 1986, TU/e has offered special two-year programs for a postgraduate doctorate of engineering (PDEng). These programs are for master's graduates. They focus on practical engineering skills.
There are ten PDEng programs at TU/e, including:
- Automotive Systems Design
- Data Science
- Healthcare Systems Design
- Software Technology
- User-System Interaction
Other Study Options
TU/e also has other educational programs:
- The Eindhoven School of Education trains master's students to become teachers.
- TIAS School for Business and Society offers an MBA program. This is a business degree for university graduates.
- There are also programs for students from other types of universities to prepare them for master's degrees at TU/e.
Global Connections
TU/e works with universities in many different countries. For example, it has connections with:
- National University of Singapore in Singapore
- Zhejiang University in China
- Georgia Institute of Technology in the US
- RMIT University in Australia
TU/e also welcomes many international students. In the 2008-2009 school year, almost 30% of the university staff were not Dutch. TU/e also has agreements with universities in 30 European countries for student exchanges.
TU/e's Impact on the Region
TU/e plays a big role in the city of Eindhoven and the area around it. It helps with education, the economy, and community life.
The university provides skilled workers for local businesses. It also works with technology companies in the area. This helps the economy grow.
How it Started with Philips
The university's role in the economy began with the Philips company. TU/e was first created to help Philips find local employees. These employees needed high-level education in areas like electronics and physics. Later, this interest grew to other companies like DAF Trucks.
Over time, Philips moved some of its operations away from the region. So, the university started working more closely with the city of Eindhoven. This led to the Brainport initiative. Brainport aims to attract high-tech companies to the region. TU/e now helps local companies and new startups.
Current Impact
TU/e hosts many research groups. These groups provide knowledge for tech companies like ASML and NXP. TU/e also helps new companies get started through programs like The Gate. Many new companies have been created from TU/e research.
TU/e is also part of the Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen triangle. This is an agreement between three cities in different countries. This region is known for its high investment in technology and knowledge. The agreement includes working together between the three technical universities in these cities.
Student Life at TU/e
Student Community
TU/e has over 110 student groups. These groups cover many interests like sports, culture, and hobbies. There are also groups for international students and student teams that work on projects.
Cool Tech Sports
Besides regular sports, TU/e students are involved in "technology sporting efforts." Here are some examples:
- Robot football
- The university's robot football team, TechUnited, has won the European Championship. They also won the world championship in 2012.
- Auto racing
- The TU/e race team, University Racing Eindhoven (URE), builds its own race cars. They compete in races like Formula Student. In 2010, they switched to an electric car. This car won the Formula Student in its first year.
Another student team, Solar Team Eindhoven (STE), builds solar-powered cars. Their cars, named Stella, have won the Cruiser class competition in the World Solar Challenge in 2013 and 2015.
The Automotive Technology InMotion team is another racing group. They aim to compete in the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
