El Monte is a city and commune located in Chile. It is part of the Talagante Province in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. In 2007, about 29,568 people lived there.
Where is El Monte?
El Monte is located in the central part of Chile. It sits on the north bank of the Mapocho River. This area is known as the Chilean Central Valley.
The city is about 55 kilometers (about 34 miles) southwest of Santiago. Santiago is the capital city of Chile. The total area of El Monte is about 118.1 square kilometers (45.6 square miles).
Who Lives in El Monte?
The National Statistics Institute conducted a census in 2002. This census counted the people living in El Monte. It found that 26,459 people lived in the commune.
Of these residents, 13,334 were men and 13,125 were women. Most people, 22,284 (84.2%), lived in urban areas. The remaining 4,175 people (15.8%) lived in rural areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of El Monte grew by 20.9%. This means 4,577 more people moved there.
How El Monte is Governed
El Monte is a commune, which is a type of local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
The alcalde for 2012-2016 was Francisco Gómez Ramírez. He is a member of the Socialist Party of Chile (PS). The communal council also has several other members who help run the city.
