Ellicottville is a small village in Cattaraugus County, New York. In 2020, about 284 people lived there. The village is named after Joseph Ellicott. He was a main agent for the Holland Land Company. Ellicottville is located in the southwest part of the town of Ellicottville. It is north of the city of Salamanca.

History of Ellicottville
The native people called this area De-as-hen-da-qua. This means "place for holding court."
The Holland Land Company opened an office here in 1818. Ellicottville was the first county seat for Cattaraugus County in 1808. Public buildings were built soon after.
The village of Ellicottville officially became a village in 1837. In 1868, the county seat moved to the village of Little Valley.
Some important places in Ellicottville are on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Ellicottville Historic District, the Ellicottville Town Hall, and the Jefferson Street Cemetery.
What to Do in Ellicottville
Skiing and Tourism
The Holiday Valley ski resort is just south of the village. The Nannen Arboretum is a beautiful garden north of the village. Ellicottville is also home to the HoliMont Ski Club. This is the largest private ski club in North America.
Because of these ski spots, Ellicottville is a top place for tourists in Cattaraugus County. Many people from Canada visit here.
Festivals and Events
Ellicottville hosts many fun festivals all year long. A big "Fall Festival" happens every year. It takes place during Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. This is also when the leaves change colors, which is very pretty.
Other festivals include Mardi Gras, a "Rock'n'Oldies Weekend," and a "Jazz and Blues Festival." There is also a "Taste of Ellicottville" event.
Local Businesses
Ellicottville has rules that keep out most big chain stores. This means its main shopping area has many unique shops. You can find local taverns, small clothing stores, and other small businesses.
Two weekly newspapers are based in Ellicottville. They are Ellicottville Now and The Villager. A monthly tourism paper also comes from the village. It is called Ellicottville Snowed-In in winter and The Summer Local the rest of the year.
For many years, Louisville Slugger baseball bats were made in Ellicottville. After that company left, the factory became a bowling alley. Fitzpatrick & Weller, a company that makes wood products, is the only factory still working in the village.
Education in Ellicottville
Students in public school attend Ellicottville Central School. The school campus is in the nearby town of Great Valley.
Religious Places
Several churches are in Ellicottville. These include Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and Episcopal churches. In 1976, the local Free Presbyterian and United Methodist Churches joined together. They formed the "United Church of Ellicottville."

Geography of Ellicottville
Ellicottville is in the southwest part of the town of Ellicottville. It covers about 2.2 square kilometers (0.83 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Great Valley Creek flows through the village. It is a smaller river that flows into the Allegheny River. Another smaller creek, Elk Creek, also runs through the middle of the village.
Ellicottville is where several roads meet. These include County Roads 13 and 71, NY-242, and U.S. Route 219. Many of the village's streets are named after early US presidents and first ladies. Examples include Washington Street, Jefferson Street, and Madison Street.
