The area we now know as Elliott Heads was once called Springfield. On November 1, 1967, its name was officially changed to Elliott Heads. This new name makes sense because the town is at the "heads" or mouth of the Elliott River. The river flows into the Coral Sea here.

The Elliott River itself was named after a man named Gilbert Eliott. He lived from 1796 to 1871. Gilbert Eliott was an important public servant, a farmer, and a politician. He was even the Speaker of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1860 to 1870.

Elliott Heads also had its own Post Office. It opened in January 1952 but closed its doors in 1986.

The local school first opened on January 16, 1913. It was originally called Airy Park State School. Sometimes people spelled it "Airey Park." The land for the school was kindly given by Mr. Breusch. He had named his first property "Airy Park" after Peter Airey. Peter Airey was a politician from the Australian Labor Party.

In 1966, the school became bigger. An old school building from Electra State School was moved here. Then, on March 23, 1967, the school's name was changed to Elliott Heads State School.
