Exploring Innes Park's Coastline

Innes Park is located right on the coast. It has a rocky shoreline with two smaller beaches. These beaches are great for exploring, especially at low tide.

Beaches and Swimming

The northern beach is about 400 meters long. At high tide, it has sand, but at low tide, you'll see a mix of sand and rocks. The southern beach is also 400 meters long. It has a narrow sandy area at high tide. Below that, there's a continuous field of boulders.

Both beaches are best for swimming when the tide is high. At low tide, the rocky areas are more visible. Be careful of strong currents near the creeks, especially when the tide is changing.

Fun by the Beach

Near the southern beach, there's a park with lots of cool things to do. You can have a BBQ, play on the children's playground, or use the exercise equipment. There's even a beach volleyball court! It's a great spot to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Fishing and Marine Life

The coastline here is part of the Great Sandy Marine Park. This means there are special rules to protect the ocean and its creatures. For example, it's a turtle monitoring area. Some activities like spearfishing, bait netting, crabbing, and line fishing are not allowed in certain areas to keep the marine life safe. You can still enjoy rock fishing along the coast.

A Glimpse into Innes Park's Past

The Innes Park area was first settled by Europeans in 1863. It was part of a large farm called Barolin pastoral station.

How Innes Park Got Its Name

In 1912, a man named Sidney North Innes bought the property. In 1930, Sidney and his wife Caroline gave some land to the local council for people to use for fun and recreation. Later, their son, Sidney Burnett Innes, divided more land for homes and farms. In 1986, the town was officially named Innes Park, honoring the Innes family for their generous gift.

Old Quarries in the Area

Historically, there were two quarries in the Innes Park area. Quarries are places where rocks or sand are dug out of the ground. These were called Bargara Quarry and Innes Park Quarry. However, in 2014, a court decided that no more digging should happen after 2016.
