Exploring Ellis Beach
Ellis Beach is a 5-kilometer (about 3-mile) stretch of coastline. It sits along the beautiful Coral Sea. You can find it about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Cairns. It's right on the Captain Cook Highway, which connects Cairns and Port Douglas.
The area of Ellis Beach also reaches out into the Coral Sea. It includes two nearby islands:
- Double Island
- Haycock Island
A Look Back in Time
Ellis Beach is located on the traditional lands of the Djabugay (Tjapukai) Aboriginal people. They are the original owners and caretakers of this land.
Double Island once had a fancy resort. However, it has not been kept up well. In 2023, people asked the Queensland Government to take back the island's lease. This would allow new plans for the island.
