Elmo is a small city located in Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. In 2020, about 114 people lived there. It is a quiet community in the northwestern part of the state.

Discovering Elmo's Past

Elmo was first settled in 1879. At that time, it was known by a different name: Ebbony. The town was officially planned out, or platted, when the railroad line reached this area. This was a big deal because railroads helped towns grow by bringing people and goods.

How Elmo Got Its Name

The name "Elmo" likely came from a popular book called St. Elmo. This novel was very famous around the time the town was founded. A post office opened in Elmo in 1886, helping the community stay connected.

Elmo is a small city that covers about 0.22 square miles (0.56 square kilometers) of land. It is located in the northwest corner of Missouri. The city is about five miles west of Clearmont. It is also about four miles south of the Iowa state border. To the east, about eleven miles away, is Westboro in Atchison County.
