Playing Career
Early Years in Portugal and England
Emerson Thome started his professional career in Brazil with Internacional. Later, he moved to Portugal. He played for clubs like Académica and Tirsense.
In 1995, he joined Benfica, one of Portugal's biggest clubs. He then came to England in 1997. He joined Sheffield Wednesday. While playing for Wednesday, Thome scored two goals. One was in the FA Cup and the other in a league game.
Time at Chelsea and Sunderland
In late 1999, Thome moved to Chelsea for about £2.7 million. He stayed at Chelsea for only nine months. It was hard for him to get a regular spot because of strong defenders like Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf.
He could not play in Chelsea's winning 1999–2000 FA Cup campaign because he had already played for another team in the competition. However, he did play when Chelsea famously beat Barcelona 3–1 in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. In 2000, Thome was sold to Sunderland for about £4 million.
At Sunderland, Thome faced many injuries. He scored two goals for Sunderland in league games. These goals were against Coventry City and Aston Villa.
Later Career and Retirement
In August 2003, Thome joined Bolton Wanderers for free. He became a regular player for Bolton. They finished eighth in the Premier League. They also reached the League Cup final in 2004. However, they lost to Middlesbrough in that final.
In 2004, he moved to Wigan Athletic. Thome helped Wigan get promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2005. He played less in his second season with Wigan. Because of this, he was loaned to Derby County for a few months.
After his loan, Wigan released him from his contract in 2006. Thome then joined the Japanese team Vissel Kobe. He played there for two seasons. In 2007, Emerson Thome announced he was retiring from professional football.
After Playing
After retiring, Thome started working for Everton. Since late 2008, he has been a chief scout in Portugal. A chief scout helps find new talented players for the team.
