Emerson Augusto Thome, born on March 30, 1972, is a former Brazilian footballer. People also called him Paredão. He was a strong central defender, which means he played in the middle of the defense to stop opposing teams from scoring.

Emerson Thome's Football Journey

Emerson Thome started his football career in Brazil. He played for Internacional as a young player. Later, he moved to Portugal to play for clubs like Académica and Tirsense. He even played for the famous Portuguese club Benfica.

Playing in England

Emerson first came to England in 1997. He joined Sheffield Wednesday from Benfica. While playing for Wednesday, he scored two goals. One was in an FA Cup match, and the other was in a league game.

In 1999, Emerson moved to Chelsea for about £2.7 million. He stayed at Chelsea for only nine months. It was hard for him to get a regular spot in the team. This was because Chelsea already had two great central defenders, Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf. He could not play in the 1999–2000 FA Cup final, which Chelsea won, because he had played for another team in the competition that season. However, he did play when Chelsea famously beat Barcelona 3-1 in a UEFA Champions League match.

After Chelsea, Emerson joined Sunderland in 2000. He played there for three years. During his time at Sunderland, he had some injuries. He scored two goals for Sunderland in league games.

In 2003, Emerson joined Bolton Wanderers for free. He became an important player for Bolton. They finished eighth in the Premier League that season. Bolton also reached the League Cup final in 2004, but they lost to Middlesbrough.

In 2004, he moved to Wigan Athletic. He helped Wigan get promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2005. Later, he was loaned to Derby County for a few months. After his loan, Wigan released him from his contract in 2006.

Moving to Japan and Retirement

After leaving Wigan, Emerson Thome moved to Japan. He joined a team called Vissel Kobe. He played there for two seasons. In 2007, Emerson Thome decided to stop playing professional football. He announced his retirement.

What He Does Now

Even after retiring from playing, Emerson Thome stayed in football. Since late 2008, he has been working for Everton. He is a chief scout in Portugal. This means he helps find new talented players for Everton.

Emerson Thome won several trophies during his career:

  • Internacional
    • Campeonato Gaúcho: 1992
