Emmanuel Issoze-Ngondet (born April 2, 1961 – died June 11, 2020) was an important politician and diplomat from Gabon. He served as the Prime Minister of Gabon from 2016 to 2019.

Before becoming Prime Minister, Issoze-Ngondet worked as a diplomat for many years. He was Gabon's representative to the United Nations twice. He also held important government jobs, including Minister of Energy and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Early Life and Diplomatic Work

Emmanuel Issoze-Ngondet was born in Makokou, Gabon, on April 2, 1961. He was a member of the Kota ethnic group.

He started his career in 1988 at Gabon's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He worked on international agreements and treaties. From 1990 to 1997, he served as a diplomat in several countries. He was a counsellor at Gabon's embassies in Cameroon, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany.

Issoze-Ngondet continued his diplomatic journey. From 1997 to 2000, he was a director at the Foreign Ministry. He handled relations with countries in the Americas and Europe.

Ambassador to Asia and Africa

From 2000 to 2006, Issoze-Ngondet was Gabon's Ambassador to South Korea. During this time, he also represented Gabon in Thailand and the Philippines.

In 2006, he became Ambassador to Ethiopia. He also served as Gabon's Permanent Representative to the African Union. This organization works to unite African countries. He also represented Gabon at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. In 2007, he became Ambassador to Kenya as well.

While in Ethiopia, Issoze-Ngondet led a group on refugees for the African Union. He once joked that Gabon could be like California in a "United States of Africa." He then added that maybe it would be more like Los Angeles!

Return to Government Roles

In August 2008, Issoze-Ngondet became Gabon's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City. He worked there for a few months.

In January 2009, he joined the Gabonese government as Minister of Energy. After President Omar Bongo passed away in June 2009, Issoze-Ngondet became Minister of Relations with Parliament. However, he left this role a month later.

Working with President Ali Bongo

During the 2009 presidential election, Issoze-Ngondet helped with Ali Bongo's campaign. After Bongo won, Issoze-Ngondet returned to his old job. He became the Permanent Representative to the UN again in November 2009.

In March 2010, he even served as the President of the United Nations Security Council. This is a very important role in the UN.

In February 2012, Issoze-Ngondet was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this position for over four years. In September 2015, he was promoted to Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Becoming Prime Minister

After President Bongo was re-elected in 2016, he chose Issoze-Ngondet to be the new Prime Minister. Issoze-Ngondet officially took office on September 29, 2016. He replaced Daniel Ona Ondo.

The new government was formed in October 2016. It included some opposition members, like Bruno Ben Moubamba. However, many from the main opposition group were not included.

Issoze-Ngondet also took part in important national talks in 2017. He helped lead discussions for the ruling party. He served as Prime Minister until January 2019.

Personal Life

Emmanuel Issoze-Ngondet was married and had six children. He also wrote a novel in French called An Ascetic in the Court. He was fluent in both French and English.
