Emperor Konoe (近衛天皇, Konoe-tennō, June 16, 1139 – August 22, 1155) was the 76th emperor of Japan. He ruled from 1142 to 1155.

Emperor Konoe became emperor when he was very young. His reign was a time when his father, the retired Emperor Toba, still held much power. This led to some disagreements in the court.

Family and Early Life

Before he became emperor, his personal name was Narihito-shinnō. He was the eighth son of Emperor Toba. His mother was Fujiwara no Nariko.

  • Kōgō (First Empress): Fujiwara no Tashi.
  • Chūgū (Second Empress): Fujiwara no Shimeko.

Emperor Konoe was named the next emperor shortly after he was born in 1139. He was officially made emperor at the age of three.

Key Events During Konoe's Reign

Here are some important events that happened while Emperor Konoe was on the throne:

Becoming Emperor

  • Eiji 1, 3rd month (1141): His father, the former Emperor Toba, became a Buddhist monk.
  • Eiji 1, 7th day of the 12th month (1141): Emperor Sutoku stepped down. Konoe, his younger brother, became the new emperor.

At this time, Fujiwara-no Tadamichi became the Sesshō, which means he was a regent. A regent helps rule when the emperor is too young. The retired Emperor Toba (called the Cloistered Emperor) still controlled most government matters. This caused problems because the former Emperor Sutoku had no power.

Important Moments

  • Kōji 2, 1st month (1143): The Cloistered Emperor Toba visited his mother.
  • Kōji 2, 5th month (1143): Konoe spent time praying at temples like Tōdai-ji.
  • Ten'yō 1, 7th month (1145): People saw a comet in the sky. Because of this, the name of the era (nengō) was changed to Kyūan.
  • Kyūan 1, 8th month (1145): The mother of former Emperor Sutoku passed away.
  • Kyūan 2, 2nd month (1146): Konoe visited Toba, the Cloistered Emperor.
  • Kyūan 2, 12th month (1146): Konoe joined a celebration for the regent, Fujiwara no Tadamichi, on his 58th birthday. This was special because the 58th year was considered lucky in Chinese astrology.
  • Kyūan 4, 6th month (1148): The imperial palace burned down.

Marriages and Court Issues

  • Kyūan 6, 1st month (1150): Konoe became an adult. He married Fujiwara-no Tokoku. She became his first empress.
  • Kyūan 6, 3rd month (1150): Konoe married again, this time to "Feï-si." She became his second empress. Konoe liked his second wife very much. This caused problems between important people in the court.
  • Kyūan 6, 12th month (1150): The regent, Minamoto-no Tadamichi, stepped down. He was then given a higher title.

Later Years and Passing

  • Ninpei 1, 1st month (1151): Fujiwara-no Yorinaga was given more power. This caused more arguments between different groups in the court.
  • Ninpei 2, 7th day of the 3rd month (1152): Konoe visited his father, Toba, to celebrate his 50th birthday.
  • Ninpei 3, 2nd day of the 1st month (1153): Taira-no Tadamori, an important official, died. His son, Taira-no Kiyomori, took his place.
  • Kyūju 2, 23rd day of the 7th month (1155): Emperor Konoe died at the age of 17. He did not have any children to take his place.
  • Kyūju 2, 24th day of the 7th month (1155): After Konoe's death, his younger brother, the 14th son of Emperor Toba, became the next emperor. He was known as Emperor Go-Shirakawa.

Emperor Konoe's reign lasted for 13 years.

Important Officials (Kugyō)

The Kugyō were a small group of the most powerful men in the Japanese court. They were usually hereditary courtiers, meaning their families had held these positions for a long time.

During Konoe's reign, some of the top officials included:

  • Sesshō (Regent): Fujiwara Tadamichi
  • Daijō-daijin (Chancellor of the Realm): Sanjō Saneyuki
  • Sadaijin (Minister of the Left): Fujiwara Yorinaga, Minamoto Arihito
  • Udaijin (Minister of the Right): Sanjō Saneyuki, Minamoto Arihito

Eras of Konoe's Reign

In Japan, years are also grouped into era names or nengō. Emperor Konoe's reign included these eras:
