Emu Bay is a lovely place on the north coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia. It was once called Maxwell from 1882 to 1941. This small town is about 124 kilometers (77 miles) southwest of Adelaide, the state capital. It's also just 13 kilometers (8 miles) west of Kingscote, which is the main town on the island.

Emu Bay is a small community with homes for both people who live there all the time and those who visit for holidays. It doesn't have shops or a main water supply. Emu Bay is famous for its beautiful swimming beach. It's one of the few beaches on Kangaroo Island where cars are allowed to drive.

The Old Jetty

A small jetty was built here in 1918. It was 109 meters (358 feet) long. This jetty allowed small ships, like the Karatta, to dock. They would load and unload goods here.

Near the jetty, there was a freshwater well. This well provided water for horses. These horses would pull wagons filled with goods to and from the bay. Until the 1930s, things like grain, farm animals, and other items were moved through this jetty.

Amazing Rocks at Emu Bay

Emu Bay is also home to a very special rock formation. It's called Emu Bay shale. This shale is a type of rock that can hold fossils.

The coastline around Emu Bay is very important for science. It stretches from Cape D'Estaing to Point Marsden. This area is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. It's recognized for its amazing geology and very old fossils. Geologists study the rocks, and palaeontologists study the fossils found here.

Government and Location

Emu Bay is part of different government areas. It is in the federal Division of Mayo. For state government, it's in the Electoral district of Mawson. Locally, it's looked after by the Kangaroo Island Council.
