North Cape is a small area located on the northern coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia. It looks out over the Investigator Strait. It's about 116 kilometers (72 miles) south-west of Adelaide, which is the capital city of South Australia. It's also quite close to Kingscote, being only about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) north of it.
About North Cape
North Cape got its official boundaries in March 2002. Its name comes from the most northern point of land along its coastline, which is called a "headland."
Where is North Cape?
North Cape is bordered by water on three sides. To the north, it has the Investigator Strait. To the east, you'll find Nepean Bay. And to the south-east, there's a smaller part of Nepean Bay called the Bay of Shoals.
Along its coast, you can find special spots like Point Marsden and Cape Rouge.
Land Use in North Cape
The land in North Cape is used for two main purposes:
- Conservation: This means protecting nature. The coastal areas are kept natural to "enhance and conserve the natural features of the coast." This helps keep the environment healthy.
- Agriculture: This means farming. The land in the south-west part of North Cape is used for growing crops or raising animals.
Important Coastal Area
A part of the coastline in North Cape is very special. This area stretches from Point Marsden in the east to Cape D'Estaing in the nearby area of Emu Bay. This entire stretch is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.
Why is it special?
It's listed because it's important for its "geological and outstanding palaeontological significance."
- Geological means it has unique rocks and landforms that tell us about Earth's history.
- Palaeontological means it's a great place to find fossils, which are the remains of ancient life.
How North Cape is Governed
North Cape is part of different government areas:
- Federal Government: It's in the federal Division of Mayo. This is how people vote for their representatives in the national government.
- State Government: It's in the state Electoral district of Mawson. This is for voting in the South Australian state government.
- Local Government: It's managed by the Kangaroo Island Council. This council looks after local services and rules for the area.
