Emyr Wyn Huws is a former Welsh professional footballer. He was born on September 30, 1993. Emyr played as a midfielder. He also represented the Wales national team. He stopped playing professional football in December 2023.
Emyr started his football journey in youth teams. He played for Swansea City and Manchester City. Later, he played for many clubs. These included Northampton Town, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, and Ipswich Town. He joined Ipswich permanently in 2017.
Before playing for the senior Wales team, Emyr played for Wales' youth teams. He played for the Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 teams. He made his debut for the main Wales team in 2014.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at Manchester City
Emyr Huws began his football career at Swansea City. He was just seven years old. After five years there, he joined Premier League club Manchester City in 2009. He became the captain of Manchester City's Under-21 team.
He scored a goal for Manchester City in a youth tournament. This was during the 2012–13 NextGen Series. His team won 3–1 against Fenerbahçe. Emyr made his first team debut for Manchester City on January 15, 2014. He played as a substitute in an FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers. In August 2014, Huws signed a new contract with Manchester City until 2016.
Loan to Northampton Town
In October 2012, Emyr joined Northampton Town on a three-month loan. This club was in EFL League Two. He played his first game for them on October 13. Northampton won 3–0 against Exeter City. His manager and captain praised his performance. Emyr played ten games for Northampton Town before his loan ended.
Loan to Birmingham City
On January 28, 2014, Huws moved to Birmingham City on loan. This club was in the Football League Championship. He started his first game for them on February 1. His shot led to a goal for his teammate, helping Birmingham draw the game. His loan was extended until the end of the season. Emyr was even voted Birmingham's player of the month for February.
He scored his first goal for Birmingham on March 12. He volleyed the ball from far away into the net. He scored his second goal with an amazing shot from 35 yards. This goal was so good that it won the club's 'Goal of the Season' award.
Playing for Wigan Athletic
On July 22, 2014, Huws joined Wigan Athletic on a six-month loan. He played his first game for Wigan in the season's opening match. It was a 2–2 draw against Reading.
After playing five games, Wigan made his move permanent on September 1, 2014. Emyr signed a four-year contract. His first youth club, Swansea City, received £250,000 from this transfer. This was because of a special agreement. Emyr played sixteen games for Wigan. He had some injuries during this time.
Before the 2015–16 season, Emyr got a knee injury. This happened during a friendly match. He was unable to play for another month.
Loan to Huddersfield Town
On August 27, 2015, Huws went on loan to Huddersfield Town. This was for the 2015–16 season. He made his debut for Huddersfield on September 12. He came on as a substitute in a game they lost to Cardiff City.
Three days later, he started his first game. He scored a free-kick goal, helping his team win 2–1. On September 19, he scored two goals against Bolton Wanderers. This helped Huddersfield win 4–1. Five days later, he scored his fourth goal in three starts. He was named the club's player of the month for September. Emyr continued to play regularly. He scored his fifth goal in a 3–1 win over Preston. He played thirty games for Huddersfield and scored five goals.

Time at Cardiff City
On August 12, 2016, Huws joined Cardiff City. He signed a three-year deal. He made his debut two days later as a substitute. Cardiff lost 2–0 to Queens Park Rangers.
Playing for Ipswich Town
On January 31, 2017, Huws joined Ipswich Town on loan. This loan lasted until the end of the 2016–17 season. He scored his first goal for Ipswich on February 11 against Aston Villa. He played 18 games during his loan and scored 3 goals. In July 2017, Emyr joined Ipswich permanently. He signed a four-year deal.
He faced many injuries during his time at Ipswich. He missed the start of the 2017–18 season due to an Achilles injury. He only played 5 games before getting a knee injury in December 2017. This injury kept him out for the rest of the season.
Emyr also missed the entire 2018–19 season. This was due to ongoing problems with his knee. He played a few games for Ipswich's Under-23 team while recovering.
He finally returned to the first team on the first day of the 2019–20 season. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win. He scored his first goal since returning on October 8, 2019. This was in a 4–0 win against Gillingham.
Emyr was in and out of the team during the 2020–21 season. On December 15, 2020, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 home win. This was his first league goal for Ipswich since signing permanently. On May 10, 2021, Ipswich announced that Emyr would leave the club.
Joining Colchester United
On January 15, 2022, Huws joined EFL League Two side Colchester United. He signed a short-term contract. At Colchester, he reunited with several former Ipswich teammates. Emyr left Colchester United at the end of the 2022–23 season.
Retirement from Football
On December 18, 2023, Emyr Huws announced he was retiring from professional football. He was 30 years old. He had not been with a club since leaving Colchester United.
International Career

Emyr Huws played for Wales at different youth levels. He played for the Under-17 and Under-19 teams. He then earned his first cap for the Wales Under-21 team in 2012. He scored his first international goal for the Under-21 team on August 14, 2013.
Huws made his debut for the senior Wales team on March 5, 2014. This was in a friendly match against Iceland. He played the whole game as Wales won 3–1. He played 3 more games for Wales in 2014. These included matches in the 2016 UEFA European Championship qualifiers.
He scored his first goal for the senior team on November 13, 2015. He came on as a substitute and scored against the Netherlands. This goal brought Wales back to a 2–2 score. However, Wales eventually lost the game 3–2.
In May 2016, Emyr was part of the training squad for Euro 2016. He played in two friendly matches before the tournament. However, he was one of the players not chosen for the final Euro 2016 squad. Later that year, he was included in the Wales squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. He played 4 games in the World Cup qualifiers. Wales finished 3rd in their group and did not qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
In 2017, Huws was called up for friendly matches against France and Panama. But he had to withdraw due to an injury.

Emyr Huws was born in Llanelli, Wales. He went to Ysgol Gynradd Pum Heol and Ysgol y Strade schools. He can speak Welsh fluently.
