Emyr Wyn Huws (born 30 September 1993) is a Welsh former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder for various clubs and the Wales national team. Huws started his football journey in youth teams at Swansea City and Manchester City.
He played for several clubs, including Northampton Town, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, Ipswich Town, and Colchester United. Emyr also proudly represented his country, Wales, at different youth levels before playing for the senior national team. He retired from professional football in December 2023.
Club Career Highlights
Starting Out at Manchester City
Emyr Huws began his football career at Swansea City when he was just seven years old. He played there for five years. In 2009, he joined Premier League club Manchester City. He became the captain of Manchester City's under-21 team.
Huws scored a goal for Manchester City in a youth tournament called the NextGen Series in 2012–13. His team won 3–1 against Fenerbahçe. He made his first team debut for Manchester City on 15 January 2014. This was in an FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers. In August 2014, Huws signed a new contract with Manchester City until 2016.
Loan to Northampton Town
In October 2012, Emyr joined Northampton Town on a three-month loan. This club plays in League Two. He played his first game for them on 13 October, helping them win 3–0 against Exeter City. His manager and captain praised his performance. After playing ten games, his loan at Northampton Town ended.
Time at Birmingham City
On 28 January 2014, Huws moved to Football League Championship club Birmingham City on a loan deal. He started his first game for them on 1 February against Derby County. His shot hit the post, leading to a goal for his teammate. His loan was extended until the end of the season.
Huws was even voted Birmingham's player of the month for February. He scored his first goal for the club on 12 March against Burnley. He hit the ball from about 25 yards out. His second goal was an amazing shot from 35 yards against Middlesbrough. This goal was so good that it won the club's 'Goal of the Season' award!
Joining Wigan Athletic
On 22 July 2014, Huws joined Wigan Athletic on a six-month loan. He played his first game for Wigan in the opening match of the season, which was a 2–2 draw against Reading.
After playing five games, Huws' move to Wigan became permanent on 1 September 2014. He signed a four-year contract. His first youth club, Swansea City, received £250,000 because of a special agreement. Huws played sixteen games for Wigan but also faced some injuries. He worked hard to recover from these injuries.
Loan to Huddersfield Town
On 27 August 2015, Huws went on loan to Football League Championship team Huddersfield Town. He made his debut for them on 12 September. Three days later, he scored his first goal for Huddersfield with a free-kick against Charlton Athletic.
On 19 September, he scored two goals against Bolton Wanderers, helping his team win 4–1. He continued his great scoring form, getting his fourth goal in three games against Nottingham Forest. Because of his excellent play, Huws was named the club's player of the month for September. He played thirty games for Huddersfield and scored five goals before returning to Wigan.
Moving to Cardiff City
On 12 August 2016, Huws joined Football League Championship team Cardiff City. He signed a three-year deal. He made his debut for Cardiff two days later as a substitute in a game against Queens Park Rangers.
Time at Ipswich Town
On 31 January 2017, Huws went on loan to Ipswich Town until the end of the season. He scored his first goal for Ipswich on 11 February 2017 against Aston Villa. He played 18 games during his loan and scored 3 goals. In July 2017, Huws officially joined Ipswich Town permanently, signing a four-year contract.
He faced some injury problems during his time at Ipswich. He missed the start of the 2017–18 season due to an Achilles injury. He then suffered a knee injury in December 2017, which kept him out for the rest of that season. He also missed the entire 2018–19 season because of this ongoing knee problem.
Huws finally returned to playing first-team football on the first day of the 2019–20 season. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win against Burton Albion. He scored his first goal after his return on 8 October 2019 in a 4–0 win against Gillingham. On 15 December 2020, Huws scored the winning goal in a 2–1 home game against Burton Albion. In May 2021, Ipswich announced that Huws would leave the club.
Playing for Colchester United
On 15 January 2022, Huws joined EFL League Two team Colchester United. He signed a short contract until the end of the 2021–22 season. At Colchester, he reunited with several former teammates from Ipswich. Huws left Colchester United at the end of the 2022–23 season.
Retirement from Football
On 18 December 2023, Emyr Huws announced that he was retiring from professional football. He was 30 years old at the time.
International Career
Emyr Huws played for Wales at different youth levels, including the under-17 and under-19 teams. He earned his first cap for the Wales U21 team in 2012. He scored his first international goal for the U21 team on 14 August 2013 against Finland.
Huws made his debut for the senior Wales team in a friendly match against Iceland on 5 March 2014. He played the whole game, helping Wales win 3–1. He played in 3 more games for Wales in 2014, including matches in the qualifiers for the 2016 UEFA European Championship.
He scored his first goal for the senior national team on 13 November 2015. He came on as a substitute and scored against the Netherlands, making the score 2–2. However, Wales eventually lost the game 3–2.
In May 2016, Huws was part of the training squad for the Euro 2016 tournament. He played in two friendly matches before the tournament. However, he was one of the players who did not make the final Euro 2016 squad. Later that year, he was included in the Wales squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. He played in 4 qualification games, but Wales did not qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Emyr Huws was born in Llanelli, Wales. He went to Ysgol Gynradd Pum Heol and Ysgol y Strade schools. He is also able to speak Welsh fluently.
