History of Endicott
How Endicott Started
Endicott was planned out in 1882. It was named after William Endicott Jr., who worked for a company called Oregon Improvement Company. The town officially became a recognized place on February 11, 1905.
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Endicott was highest in 1920. Since then, the population has slowly gone down. This happened because new farm technology allowed fewer people to farm larger areas of land.
Impact on the Town's Economy
The decrease in population changed the town's economy. In the 1950s, Endicott had many different stores. By 2011, there was only a grocery store, a post office, and a gas station.
School Changes
In 1987, Endicott High School closed. The school district joined with the nearby community of St. John. The graduating class of 1986 had only one student! The elementary school in Endicott is still open. The town also hosts the middle school for both St. John and Endicott students.
