Cold Stream Pond is a large lake that covers the eastern part of Enfield. You can launch a boat there from Old Hatchery Road. The pond has a narrow part that separates a smaller northern section from a larger southern section.
The most important stream flowing into the pond is Smelt Brook. It brings water from Upper Cold Stream Pond and Little Round Pond. Water flows out of Cold Stream Pond through Cold Stream, which travels about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south. This stream eventually reaches the Passadumkeag River.
The Cobb State Fish Hatchery is located next to the pond's outlet. This hatchery uses water from the pond to raise fish. These fish are then released into other lakes and rivers.
Fish in Cold Stream Pond
Cold Stream Pond is home to a natural population of lake trout. These fish lay their eggs in Webb Cove, located in the southeastern part of the pond. The lake trout eat rainbow smelt, which are smaller fish that lay their eggs in Smelt Brook. In 1876, Atlantic salmon were also brought to the pond.
