The Sweet History of Entenmann's
Entenmann's started a long time ago, in 1898, in New York City. The founder, William Entenmann, learned how to bake from his father in Stuttgart, Germany. He used these skills to open his own bakery in Brooklyn, New York.
Later, William moved his bakery to Bay Shore, New York on Long Island. At first, the bakery delivered treats right to people's homes. This home delivery service grew very popular, with 30 different routes! When William's son, William Jr., took over, the bakery became even more successful. Even famous singer Frank Sinatra was a regular customer!
After William Jr. passed away in 1951, his wife Martha and their sons, Robert, Charles, and William, took over. The family decided to stop making bread and focus only on pastries and cakes. They also changed from home delivery to selling their products in grocery stores.
In 1959, the Entenmann family came up with a clever idea: the "see-through" cake box. This clear box is still used by many bakeries today! The business kept growing, and by 1961, they had new bakeries and factories in Bay Shore, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Charles Entenmann was a big part of making the company famous across the country. He helped make the baking process more automated, even designing a computer system to mix ingredients.
By 1972, Entenmann's began selling chocolate chip cookies. They have sold over 620 million of these cookies! Since 1898, they have also sold more than 700 million of their famous "all-butter loaf cake."
Over the years, Entenmann's has been owned by several different companies. In 2008, a Mexican company called Grupo Bimbo bought Entenmann's. Other well-known brands owned by Bimbo Bakeries USA include Thomas', Brownberry, and Oroweat.
In 2014, Entenmann's stopped baking at their Bay Shore, New York, location. However, other parts of the business, like sales and distribution, continued there.
