A Look Back in Time: School History

Episcopal High School opened its doors in 1839. It was the very first high school in Virginia. When it first started, it was called the 'Howard School'. Later, people simply knew it as 'The High School'.

For many years, only boys were allowed to attend Episcopal High School. But in 1991, things changed! The school welcomed its first 48 female students. Today, about half of all the students at Episcopal High School are girls.

Understanding the Honor Code

Episcopal High School has a special set of rules called the Honor Code. Many schools have similar rules to help students learn to be honest and responsible.

Episcopal's Honor Code is very clear. It says:

  • I will not lie.
  • I will not cheat.
  • I will not steal.
  • I will report the student who does.

When students finish important schoolwork, like a test, they must write a special sentence. They also sign their name to show they followed the Honor Code. This sentence reminds them of their promise:

  • I hereby certify upon my honor that I have neither given nor received assistance on this examination, nor am I aware of any breach in the honor system.
