Erico Boyles Aumentado (May 18, 1940 – December 25, 2012) was an important leader from Bohol, Philippines. He served in many government roles. He was a governor, vice governor, and a member of the provincial board in Bohol. He also worked as a congressman and a deputy speaker in the Philippine House of Representatives. He made history as the first governor of Bohol to serve for three terms in a row, from 2001 to 2010.

Early Life and Education

Erico B. Aumentado was born in Fatima, Ubay, Bohol, Bohol, on May 18, 1940. He was a very bright student from a young age.

School Days and Achievements

He finished elementary school at Ubay Central Elementary School. He then went to Holy Child Academy in Ubay, Bohol for high school. He was the top student in his class for both elementary and high school. This means he was the valedictorian.

College and Law School

Erico Aumentado received a full scholarship to attend Rafael Palma College (now University of Bohol). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. He graduated with magna cum laude, which is a very high academic honor.

He continued his studies at the same school and earned his law degree. He passed the Philippine Bar Examination in 1964, becoming a lawyer. Later, he even taught law at the college.

Student Leadership and Journalism

While in college, Erico Aumentado was a big leader among students. He was elected chairman of the Student Council Association of the Philippines in 1961. He also served as vice president of the College Editors’ Guild of the Philippines.

He was an excellent student journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Collegian, from 1958 to 1961. He received the Mitra Medal Award for being an outstanding student journalist.

He also worked as a staff member for the Bohol Chronicle newspaper starting in 1959. He later became a columnist, writing his own section called “Between Extremes.” He also worked as a correspondent for major national newspapers like The Manila Times and People's Journal.

Political Career Highlights

Erico Aumentado was inspired by former President Carlos P. Garcia to enter politics in 1967. He started his political journey at a young age.

First Steps in Government

At just 27 years old, he was elected as a provincial board member in 1967. This made him the youngest person to hold that position at the time. In 1988, he became the vice governor of Bohol.

Serving in Congress

In 1992, he was elected as a representative for Bohol's 2nd District in the Philippine House of Representatives. He served three terms in this role, until 2001. From 2000 to 2001, he was a Deputy Speaker. This is an important leadership role in Congress.

Leading Bohol as Governor

Erico Aumentado served as the governor of Bohol for three terms, from 2001 to 2010. He was the first governor of Bohol to achieve this. During his time as governor, he also led important regional groups. He was chairman of the Regional Development Council and the Regional Tourism Council of Central Visayas.

He also became the National President of the League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP). This group represents all the provinces in the country. He also led the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), which is a big organization for local officials. He was the first person from Bohol to be elected to these national positions.

Return to Congress

After serving as governor, he was elected back to the Philippine House of Representatives in 2010. He served as a congressman until his death in 2012. His son took over his position in Congress seven months after his passing.
