Erin is a small town located in Chemung County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,820 people lived there.
The town got its name from early settlers who came from Ireland. Erin is located east of Elmira and sits along the northern edge of Chemung County. It is part of the larger Elmira area.

Discovering Erin's Past
The area that is now Erin was first settled by people before the year 1816. The town of Erin was officially created in 1822. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Chemung.
Historic Places in Erin
The Scotchtown Cemetery is an important historical site in Erin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This means it's a special place recognized for its history.
Erin's Volunteer Fire Department
The Erin Volunteer Fire Department started on May 5, 1955. A kind person named Merton Schanbacker donated land for the first fire station. Later, in 1998, a new fire station was built right next to the old one.
Today, the fire department has about 25 volunteers. These brave people help keep the community safe. They use six special vehicles, including an ambulance, a rescue truck, an engine, a tanker, a brush truck, and a UTV.
Exploring Erin's Geography
Erin covers a total area of about 115.2 square kilometers (44.5 square miles). Most of this area, about 114.6 square kilometers (44.25 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.6 square kilometers (0.22 square miles), is water.
Newtown Creek, a small river, flows through the town towards the west. This creek eventually joins the Chemung River. The northern border of Erin is also the border of Schuyler County.
Park Station: A Local Gem
Park Station is a large county park in the northern part of Erin. It covers 384 acres, which is like 384 football fields! The park has a 95-acre lake where you can fish, swim, and use non-motorized boats. In winter, you can even go ice fishing and ice skating.
The park also offers camping, hiking trails, picnic spots, and places for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There are 40 campsites, with 20 of them right by the lake. You can find more information about Park Station on the Chemung County website.
Town Government and Roads
The main offices for Erin's town government are located along New York State Route 223. This important road also passes through the town, making it easy to get around.

The population of Erin has changed over the years. In 1830, there were 976 people. The population grew to 2,054 in 2000, but then decreased to 1,820 in 2020.
