About Zion Wild Buckwheat
This interesting plant is a type of herb. It can grow upright or spread out along the ground, reaching up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) tall. Its leaves can be up to 6 centimeters (about 2.4 inches) long and are covered in tiny hairs, making them feel soft.
Different Kinds of Zion Wild Buckwheat
There are two main types, or "varieties," of Zion wild buckwheat. These varieties are slightly different, mainly in the color of their flowers and where they grow.
The Zion Wild Buckwheat Variety
The first variety is called zionis, and it's the one most commonly known as the Zion wild buckwheat. Its flowers can be white or yellow. You can find this variety in several places:
- In Utah, it grows in Kane, San Juan, Washington, and Wayne counties.
- In Arizona, it has been found in Coconino and Mohave counties.
The Point Sublime Wild Buckwheat Variety
The second variety is called coccineum, and it's known as the Point Sublime wild buckwheat. This one is special because its flowers are a bright, beautiful red color! It's much rarer than the other variety. So far, it has only been found in two specific spots:
- One location is right on the edge of the famous Grand Canyon in Coconino County, Arizona.
- The other spot is in Hack Canyon, which is in Mohave County, Arizona.
