The Klamath fawn lily (scientific name: Erythronium klamathense) is a beautiful and rare flowering plant. It belongs to the lily family. You can find this special plant growing in northern California and southern Oregon. It likes to live in the Klamath Mountains and the lower parts of the Cascade Range.

What is the Klamath Fawn Lily?

The Klamath fawn lily is a type of plant called a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows from a bulb, which is like a small underground storage unit.

Leaves and Stems

Each plant usually has two long, narrow leaves. These leaves can grow up to 17 centimeters (about 6.7 inches) long. They have a slightly wavy edge, which makes them unique. The flowers grow on a straight stem that can reach up to 20 centimeters (about 7.9 inches) tall. Each stem can have one to three flowers.

Flowers and Colors

The flowers of the Klamath fawn lily are very pretty. Each flower has parts called tepals, which are like petals and sepals combined. These tepals are usually 2 or 3 centimeters long. When the flowers first open, they are white with a yellow base. As they get older, they slowly turn a lovely pink color.

Stamens and Pollen

Inside the flower, you will see long parts sticking out. These are the stamens. The stamens have large, pale yellow parts at their ends called anthers. Anthers hold the pollen, which is important for the plant's reproduction.

Where Does it Grow?

The Klamath fawn lily is native to specific areas in the western United States.

In California

In northern California, you can find this lily in Shasta County and Siskiyou County.

In Oregon

In southern Oregon, it grows in several counties. These include Jackson County, Josephine County, Klamath County, Douglas County, and Lane County.

Natural Habitat

This plant prefers to grow in the Klamath Mountains. It also lives in the southernmost parts of the Cascade Range. These areas provide the right conditions for the Klamath fawn lily to thrive.
