Where is Etadunna?
Etadunna is part of a large area in South Australia called the Pastoral Unincorporated Area. This means it's not part of a local council like a city or town. It's also in the Far North region of the state.
What is Etadunna Like?
The land in Etadunna has many sand dunes. These "dunefields" are broken up by large, flat areas of clay called claypans. There are also big salt lakes with gypsum dunes, which are dunes made of a mineral called gypsum.
The famous Birdsville Track runs through Etadunna from south to north. This track is a long, unsealed road used by travellers and for cattle. The Cooper Creek also flows across the northern part of Etadunna. This creek is an important water source in the dry landscape.
Part of Lake Gregory is in the south-eastern corner of Etadunna. This lake is connected to the Cooper Creek system.
What Do People Do There?
The main activities in Etadunna are primary production and conservation.
- Primary production means making things directly from natural resources. Here, it mostly involves raising cattle.
- Conservation means protecting nature. This is important for the Coongie Lakes wetland system, which is on the eastern side of Etadunna.
In 2016, a survey counted the people living in Etadunna and nearby areas. It found that 63 people lived there.
A Bit of History
The name Etadunna became official on April 26, 2013. The name comes from a very old local name for a large cattle farm called Etadunna Station.
Special Places in Etadunna
Etadunna has several important places that are special for their culture or nature:
- The Coongie Lakes wetland system: Part of this amazing wetland is in the north-east of Etadunna. It's so important that it's listed as a Ramsar wetland (a wetland of international importance) and a DIWA wetland (a nationally important wetland).
- The Killalpaninna Mission site: This is a historic site.
- The Lake Palankarinna Fossil Reserve: This area is famous for its fossils. Both the mission site and the fossil reserve are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means they are protected because of their historical importance.
- The "shipwreck" of the barge MV Tom Brennan: Even though Etadunna is far from the ocean, this barge is listed as a historic shipwreck in South Australia. It's a reminder of how goods were once transported on inland waterways.
