Eureka is a city in Kansas, United States. It is also the county seat of Greenwood County, Kansas. This means it is the main town where the county government is located. In 2020, about 2,332 people lived in Eureka.

History of Eureka

The first people settled in Eureka in 1857. A post office opened there in August 1858. The city was officially planned out in 1867. It became an incorporated city in 1870. The name "Eureka" comes from a Greek word. It means "I have found it!"

Tornadoes in Eureka

Eureka has been hit by strong tornadoes a couple of times.

2016 Tornado Event

On July 7, 2016, an EF2 tornado hit Eureka. This happened around 9:45 PM. The tornado damaged over 143 buildings. This included at least 50 homes, businesses, a nursing home, and a grain elevator. Luckily, no one was hurt during this tornado.

2018 Tornado Event

Another strong tornado, an EF3, struck Eureka on June 26, 2018. It hit at 7:21 PM during daylight hours. This tornado damaged or destroyed 175 buildings. Seventy-eight homes were damaged, with 12 of them becoming unlivable and 10 completely destroyed. Eight people were injured in this event.

Eureka is located next to the Fall River. The city covers an area of about 2.28 square miles (5.93 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
