Just like people can have different families, butterflies can have different groups called subspecies. These are slightly different versions of the same species. Here are the known subspecies of Eurytides dioxippus:
- E. d. dioxippus: You can find this one from Panama to Colombia.
- E. d. marae: This subspecies lives in southwestern Venezuela.
- E. d. diores: This one is found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
- E. d. lacandones: This subspecies is also known as the thick-border kite swallowtail. It lives in southwestern Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and western Panama.
What Eurytides dioxippus Looks Like
This butterfly has very special wings. The top part of its wings has a common green-yellow triangle shape. On its front wings, you might see small marks from old bands. The back wings have two red spots near the bottom corner. These butterflies are often seen in collections from places like Bogota, Colombia. They live in valleys at medium heights, such as the Gauca, Magdalena, and Meta Rivers.
