Evald Mikson (Icelandic: Eðvald Hinriksson) was an Estonian athlete and police officer. He was born on July 12, 1911, in Tartu, Estonia. Evald was a talented sportsman who played both basketball and football. He was a goalkeeper for the Estonia national football team, playing in seven international matches between 1934 and 1938. After World War II, he moved to Iceland. There, he became very important in developing sports, especially basketball, and is seen as one of the people who helped bring basketball to the country.

Early Life and Sports Career
Evald Mikson grew up in Tartu, Estonia. From a young age, he loved playing sports. He enjoyed football, basketball, and ice hockey.
When he was 19, he joined the army and served for about a year and a half. In the 1930s, he played football semi-professionally. At the same time, he studied at the police academy in Tallinn.
Mikson was a multi-sport athlete. He also played basketball in Tallinn from 1934 to 1936. Later, he worked for the Estonian political police.
Life During World War II
Evald Mikson left Estonia when the Soviet Union took control in 1940. He returned during the German occupation of Estonia. During this time, he worked with the police force.
In 1944, Mikson escaped from Estonia to Sweden. In 1946, he was supposed to travel to Venezuela by boat. However, the boat ended up in Iceland, and he stayed there for the rest of his life.
Life in Iceland and Sports Development
After moving to Iceland, Evald Mikson first lived in Akureyri. In 1949, he married Sigríður Bjarnadóttir. They moved to Vestmannaeyjar, where he became a sports coach.
Mikson is known as one of the people who helped start basketball in Iceland. He was the first coach for the ÍR men's basketball team. This team played in the very first Icelandic Basketball Tournament in 1952.
Family and Legacy
Evald Mikson had three children with his wife, Sigríður Bjarnadóttir. Two of his sons became famous footballers.
His son, Jóhannes Eðvaldsson, played for the well-known club Celtic F.C. in the 1970s. Another son, Atli Eðvaldsson, played for Borussia Dortmund. Atli also played for and coached the Icelandic national football team.
Later Life and Passing
Evald Mikson passed away on December 27, 1993. He died at St. Jósefs Hospital in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland.
