Special Burial Sites
The southern area of Evanston South has a cemetery called Smithfield Memorial Park. The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority manages this cemetery.
Wangayarta: A Place of Return
In 2021, a very important new burial site was created within the Smithfield Memorial Park. This site is called Wangayarta. It was built to welcome home the remains of Kaurna people. These are the ancestors of the traditional owners of the land.
The land for Wangayarta was given by Adelaide Cemeteries. It was a joint effort with the South Australian Museum and the South Australian Government. Many elders and community members helped design this special place. These included Uncle Jeffrey Newchurch and Aunty Heather Agius. The Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation also supported the project.
In November 2021, the South Australian Museum said sorry to the Kaurna people. This was because the museum had held about 4,600 Aboriginal remains for 165 years. The first 100 ancestors were then buried at Wangayarta. The memorial site is shaped like a Kaurna shield. This shape is meant to protect the ancestors now resting there. More burials took place in June 2022.
