A Look Back in Time
Evie has a long history, with many ancient sites. One important place is Gurness. This is an Iron Age broch, which was a large, round stone tower built a very long time ago. It overlooks Eynhallow Sound, a narrow stretch of water.
How Evie Makes a Living
Evie is known for its farms. There are two big dairy farms, Dale and Georth, and also Burgar farm. You can also find a few beef farms here. The soil in this part of Orkney is very good for farming.
The milk from these dairy farms helps make the famous award-winning Orkney cheese. It's also used for Orkney ice cream and other tasty dairy products.
Wind Power at Burgar Hill
You can see five large wind turbines on Burgar Hill in Evie. They are visible from many parts of the West Mainland. The Burgar Hill Wind Farm started in 1983. This makes it one of the first wind farms ever built in the United Kingdom.
Famous People from Evie
Evie is the birthplace of Ernest Marwick. He was a well-known writer from the Orkney Islands.
Another notable person was Very Rev Dr A. J. Campbell DD. He was a minister in Evie. He also served as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1945 and 1946. This is a very important leadership role in the Church of Scotland.
Fun Folklore
Local stories say that Evie was once home to a farmer called Guidman o' Thorodale. He was famous for chasing away the Finfolk from the island of Eynhallow. The Finfolk were magical shape-shifting mer-people. They could change between human and seal forms.
