Fairmont's Early Days
Fairmont was officially planned and laid out in 1871. This happened when the Burlington & Quincy Railroad extended its train tracks to this spot. The village's name was chosen to fit with other towns along the new railway line. These towns were named in alphabetical order as the train traveled west from Lincoln.
How Fairmont Got Its Name
The towns along the railroad line were named in order: Berks, Crete, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, and Grafton. The name "Fairmont" means "beautiful mountain" or "high place." This name was chosen because the town is located on a high piece of land, offering nice views.
Growth and Development
By the fall of 1872, Fairmont was growing quickly. It had a new school building, hotels, and more stores. Lumberyards and places to buy coal and feed were also being built. The village's first newspaper, the "Fairmont Bulletin," started in 1872. By 1881, two more newspapers, the "Nebraska Bulletin" and the "Nebraska Signal," were also being published.
One of the first big businesses in Fairmont was the Fairmont Creamery Company. It was started in 1884. This company later moved its main offices to Omaha in 1907.
