Farida Jalal (born Farida Sami; May 18, 1950) is a famous Indian actress. She has worked mostly in Hindi films. Farida Jalal has been acting for almost 50 years and has appeared in over 200 movies!
She is known for playing strong characters in independent films. She also played many important supporting roles in big Bollywood movies. Farida Jalal has won many awards, including four Filmfare Awards.
Farida Jalal started her acting journey with the film Taqdeer in 1967. In the 1970s and early 1980s, she played both main and supporting roles. People especially remember her for her roles in Aradhana (1969), Paras (1971), Henna (1991), and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for the last three films.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, she became very popular for playing motherly roles and strong female characters. She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) for her role in Mammo (1994). In 2012, she won the Best Actress Award at the Harlem International Film Festival for her movie A Gran Plan.

Farida Jalal's Acting Journey
Farida Jalal was born in Bombay on May 18, 1950. Her acting career began in the 1960s. In 1965, she won a talent contest called the United Film Producers Talent Hunt. This contest was sponsored by Filmfare magazine. She and Rajesh Khanna were chosen as the winners. They were presented on stage at the Filmfare Awards event.
Farida Jalal got her first movie offer for Taqdeer from Tarachand Barjatya. He was in the audience when she won the talent contest. In an interview, she shared how she started her career. She said she was just out of school when she got her first film. She was surprised to later work with Rajesh Khanna in Aradhana.
Playing Sister Roles
Early in her career, Farida Jalal often played the role of the hero's sister. Sometimes she played the hero's fiancée who was not chosen. She explained that it started with the film Gopi. In that movie, she played the sister of the famous actor Dilip Kumar. She was very excited about this role.
She became very popular for playing sister roles. Many actors wanted her to play their sister in films. She often had more important and dramatic scenes than the main heroines. She received awards for these roles. For example, in Paras, she played Sanjeev Kumar's sister. She had a bigger role than the heroine, Raakhee-di. She won her first award for this film. She also won an award for Majboor, where she played Amitabh Bachchan's sister. She felt happy getting strong roles as a sister.

During the 1990s, Farida Jalal appeared in many major films. These include Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..., and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996 for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
Farida Jalal also played the main role in the film Mammo. This movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Farida Jalal herself won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) for her performance. She also acted in many TV shows, like the comedy series Dekh Bhai Dekh.
In 2003, Farida Jalal starred in Shararat, where she had a leading role. In 2005, she helped host the 50th Filmfare Awards in Mumbai. She also appeared in the Punjabi film Yaariyan in 2008. Later, she joined the TV show Balika Vadhu.
Farida Jalal's Personal Life
Farida Jalal was married to actor Tabrez Barmavar. He was from Bhatkal, Karnataka. They met while working on the film Jeevan Rekha. They fell in love and got married in November 1978. The couple moved to Bangalore, where her husband had a soap factory business. They have a son named Yaseen. Her husband passed away in September 2003.
In 2017, there were some fake reports online saying that she had died. These were just rumors and not true.
