Faruk Hadžibegić: A Football Journey
Faruk Hadžibegić started his football journey in his hometown of Sarajevo. He became a professional player and later a successful coach. His career took him to different countries, including Spain, France, and Turkey.
Playing Career Highlights
Faruk Hadžibegić played as a sweeper, a position where he would "sweep up" any loose balls and protect the goal.
Early Days at Sarajevo
Hadžibegić began his youth career with Sarajevo in 1966. He joined the senior team in 1976 and played there until 1985. He was a key player when Sarajevo won the 1984–85 Yugoslav First League title. This was a big achievement for the club.
Moving to Europe
After his time in Sarajevo, Hadžibegić moved to Spain to play for Real Betis from 1985 to 1987. He then spent seven years in France with Sochaux (1987–1994). At Sochaux, he played alongside his friend and fellow Bosnian, Mehmed Baždarević. He finished his playing career at Toulouse in 1995.
International Matches for Yugoslavia
Faruk Hadžibegić was a very important player for the Yugoslavia national team. He played 61 matches for his country, which makes him one of the most-capped Bosnian players for Yugoslavia.
European Championship Debut
He played his first international match in October 1982. It was a European Championship qualification game against Norway.
The 1990 FIFA World Cup
Hadžibegić was part of the Yugoslavia team that played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. He played in all five of his team's matches. Yugoslavia reached the quarter-finals, where they faced Argentina.
The game ended in a 0–0 draw, even after extra time. The winner was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Unfortunately, Yugoslavia lost the shootout, and Hadžibegić missed the final penalty kick. This meant the Yugoslav team was out of the tournament.
Final International Game
