Field hockey at the 2024 Summer Olympics – Women's qualification facts for kids
This article explains how women's field hockey teams qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The qualification process happened between August 2023 and January 2024. In the end, twelve teams earned their spots to compete in the main tournament. Teams from all five major hockey regions around the world (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania) got a chance to qualify.
France, as the host country, automatically got a spot in the women's tournament. This was because their team was ranked among the top twenty-five in the world. The other eleven spots were given out through different tournaments. Some teams qualified by winning their continental championships, while others earned their place in special "last chance" Olympic qualifying tournaments.

How Teams Qualified
Twelve teams will play in the women's field hockey tournament at the Olympics. Each country's team (called a National Olympic Committee or NOC) can send sixteen players, plus two extra players who can be substitutes.
Host Nation Spot
Since France is hosting the 2024 Olympics, their women's field hockey team automatically qualified. This was allowed because they were ranked in the top 25 teams worldwide. If the French team had won the 2023 EuroHockey Championships, it would have changed how some other spots were given out in the "wild card" tournaments.
Continental Championships
Teams could also qualify by winning their continent's championship. The winners from these five major tournaments earned a spot for their country:
- Africa: The 2023 Women's African Olympic Qualifier
- Americas: The 2023 Pan American Games
- Asia: The 2022 Asian Games
- Europe: The 2023 EuroHockey Championship
- Oceania: The 2023 Oceania Cup
Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (Wild Card)
The remaining spots were filled through two special tournaments called the FIH Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs). These took place from January 13 to 20, 2024. Each tournament had eight teams, and the top three teams from each tournament earned a spot in the Olympics.
Teams that played in these OQTs were chosen based on their world rankings and how many teams from their continent were highly ranked. Teams that had already qualified (like France and the continental champions) were removed from this list, making room for other strong teams.
