How Teams Qualified
Twelve teams played in the men's field hockey tournament at the Olympics. Each country sent a team of sixteen players, plus two substitutes.
Host Nation Spot
Since France was hosting the Olympics, their men's field hockey team got an automatic spot. They needed to be ranked among the top twenty-five teams in the world by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). If France had won the 2023 EuroHockey Championships, it would have changed how many spots were available in other tournaments.
Continental Tournaments
Teams could also qualify by winning their main tournament in their part of the world. The winners from these five regions earned a spot for their country:
- Africa: The 2023 Men's African Olympic Qualifier
- Americas: The 2023 Pan American Games
- Asia: The 2022 Asian Games
- Europe: The 2023 EuroHockey Championship
- Oceania: The 2023 Oceania Cup
Olympic Qualifying Tournaments
The remaining spots for the Olympics were decided in two special tournaments called the FIH Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs). These were held in January 2024. Each tournament had eight teams. The top three teams from each of these two tournaments earned a spot for their country at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Teams were chosen for these OQTs based on their world rankings and how many teams from their continent were highly ranked. The six teams that had already qualified (France and the five continental winners) were removed from the list. The highest-ranked teams that had not yet qualified then got to play in these OQTs.
On September 28, 2023, the FIH announced that Oman would host one of these qualification tournaments instead of Pakistan.
