Finniss (which used to be called Queen's Own Town) is a small settlement in South Australia. It is located on the Victor Harbor railway line. This is a train line that runs a short distance north-east of where it crosses the Finniss River.

The Story of Finniss

How Finniss Got Its Name

The town of Finniss has an interesting history. It was first planned out in 1867. At that time, it was given the name Queen's Own Town. This name was chosen to honor a British army group called the Queens Own Regiment of Foot.

The town was set up when the railway line was being built. This important line was connecting the towns of Goolwa and Strathalbyn.

The name of the town stayed Queen's Own Town for many years. However, the nearby train station was already called Finniss. This station was named after Colonel Boyle Travers Finniss. He was an early surveyor and also the very first Premier of South Australia. A Premier is like the leader of the state government.

In 1940, the town's name was officially changed to Finniss. This made the town's name match the railway station.
