A Look Back in Time
Ashbourne was planned and created in 1865. A person named C. S. Keeling designed the town. He laid it out on Bull's Creek, which was part of his land. This area was known as "Finniss Flat."
Local School
Ashbourne is home to a campus of the Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School. This school was started in 1996. It teaches students from Reception (the first year of school) all the way up to Year 12.
Cricket in Ashbourne
Even though Ashbourne is a small town, it has a very good cricket club. The club has teams for both older players and younger players.
The Ashbourne Bulls
The Ashbourne Cricket Club is known as the "Bulls." Their team colours are green and gold. The club was started way back in 1895. It has always had strong connections to the Adelaide Oval. This is a famous cricket ground in South Australia.
A Special Connection to Adelaide Oval
A founding member of the club, Harry Meyers, was closely involved with the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA). Did you know that the soil used for the pitches at the Adelaide Oval first came from Ashbourne? This was because the black clay soil found in the area was perfect for making cricket pitches.
Club Success and Grounds
The Ashbourne Cricket Club is the oldest club that has been playing continuously in the Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges area. They have been very successful since they started. From the 1900s to the 1950s, the club was a top team in the Alexandra Cricket Association. The cricket grounds in Ashbourne are excellent. Their turf wickets (the playing surface) are thought to be among the best in the Greater Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula, and Murray Lands Regions.
