The national flag of the Comoros was created in 2001. It was officially adopted on December 23, 2001. This flag still shows a crescent moon and four stars. These symbols have been used in different ways since 1975. That was when the Comoros was fighting for its independence. The government calls it the "national emblem," but it is truly their national flag.

Colours of the Flag
The Comoros flag has five main colours. These are yellow, white, red, blue, and green. The government has not given exact shades for these colours.
What the Flag Means
The flag has a white crescent moon and four white five-pointed stars. These are placed inside a green triangle.
The flag also has four horizontal stripes. Each stripe stands for one of the four main islands of the Comoros nation:
- Yellow represents Mohéli.
- White represents Mayotte. Mayotte is a French territory that the Comoros claims as its own.
- Red represents Anjouan.
- Blue represents Grande Comore.
The four stars on the flag also stand for these four islands. The crescent moon and the green colour are important symbols. They show that Islam is the main religion in the Comoros.
Usually, the points of the stars face upwards. This is how the flag was shown when it was first adopted.
History of the Flag
The first official flag for the Comoros was made in 1963. This was before the Comoros became independent. It had a white crescent moon and four stars in a diagonal line. The background was green. This design was used after independence in 1975.
The flag changed in 1975 when Ali Soilih became president. The crescent moon moved, and the stars were placed in a diamond shape. Two-thirds of the flag became red. This red colour showed the government's socialist ideas at the time.
When Ahmed Abdallah became president again in 1978, the flag changed once more. It became completely green again. The crescent moon moved to the center, and the stars formed a line between its points.
In 1992, a new constitution was adopted. The flag changed again. The crescent moon and stars were turned to face upwards.
Another new constitution in 1996 led to another flag change. The crescent and stars were rotated. Two white writings in Arabic were added. One said "Muhammed" and the other said "Allah". This flag was changed by a public vote in 2001 to become the flag used today.
