Flag of the Republic of China facts for kids

The flag of the Republic of China is a special symbol for the country. It has a bright red background. In the top left corner, there's a navy blue square. Inside this blue square, you'll see a white sun with 12 triangular rays.
In Chinese, people often call this flag "Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth" (青天白日滿地紅). This name helps describe its colors and what they might represent.
History of the Flag
The flag was first used a long time ago, in 1912. It started as the flag for the Navy in mainland China. Later, in 1928, a political party called the Kuomintang (KMT) made it the official national flag of the Republic of China.
However, things changed in 1949. After the People's Republic of China was formed, this flag was no longer used in mainland China. Today, it is mainly seen in Taiwan, which is officially known as the Republic of China.
Where You Might See the Flag Today
Even though it's not used in mainland China anymore, the flag of the Republic of China is still very important. You can see it in many places, especially in Taiwan.
It flies over government buildings, like the Presidential Office Building. People also wave it during important events, such as elections or national celebrations. You might also spot it at Taiwanese offices in other countries around the world. Sometimes, communities of people from Taiwan living overseas also display this flag.
