The Florida Mountains are next to New Mexico State Road 11. This road goes north and south towards Chihuahua. In Chihuahua, it becomes Highway 23. This highway connects to Mexican Federal Highway 2. That is a main road in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. It runs along the U.S.-Mexico border.
About the Florida Mountains
The Florida Mountains are a small, compact group of mountains. They are about 12 miles (19 km) long. Their peaks range from 5,000 to 7,000 feet (1,500 to 2,100 m) high. The highest point is Florida Peak. It is about 7,295 feet (2,224 m) tall. This peak is located near the northern part of the range.
Other high peaks are in the middle and southern parts of the mountains. These include Gym, Baldy, and South Peak. There are also four other peaks in the far northwest. Besides Florida Peak, Capitol Dome is the tallest of these. It stands at about 5,962 feet (1,817 m) high.
Most of the land around these mountains is flat. The city of Deming and its nearby areas are to the northwest and west. They are next to the lower hills of the range. There are also towns in the flatlands to the northeast. Open flat areas stretch out to the east and southeast.
New Mexico 193 runs along the north and northeast sides of the mountains. This is where Rockhound State Park is located. The park sits between the Florida Mountains and the Little Florida Mountains. The Little Florida Mountains are a smaller range about 3 miles (4.8 km) long.
Animals and Nature
A type of wild goat called the Persian (Bezoar) Ibex has been brought to this area. These animals are an introduced species. This means they were brought here by people from another place. They now have a strong population living in the region.
