Foel y Geifr is a mountain in Wales. It's not the tallest mountain in its area, but it's an important part of a group of hills called the Hirnantau. These hills rise up from the southeastern side of a beautiful lake called Llyn Tegid.

People sometimes get a bit confused about which mountain range Foel y Geifr belongs to. Because it's part of a horseshoe-shaped group of hills called the Hirnant horseshoe, many think it's part of the Berwyn range. However, if you look at its geography, it's actually part of the Aran Fawddwy group. Its "parent peak" (the taller mountain it's connected to) is Esgeiriau Gwynion. Foel y Geifr is the easternmost mountain in the Aran group.

Exploring Foel y Geifr

Foel y Geifr stands at 626 meters (about 2,054 feet) above sea level. That's taller than many buildings! It's located in Gwynedd, which is a county in Wales. The mountain is also part of the famous Snowdonia area, known for its stunning natural beauty.

What's the Summit Like?

When you reach the very top of Foel y Geifr, you'll find that the summit is mostly covered in grass. There's also a special marker there called a trig point. This is a concrete pillar that surveyors use to help map the land.

The land around the summit is a bit different. It's often covered in heather plants and can be quite boggy, meaning it's wet and squishy. This area forms the western "back wall" of a valley called Cwm Hirnant.

Nearby Peaks and Views

Foel y Geifr is the highest point on a ridge. Along this same ridge, you can find two other peaks: Trum y Gwragedd and Foel Goch (Hirnant). To the southwest, you'll see Moel y Cerrig Duon. If you look to the east, you might spot Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw and Cyrniau Nod. These nearby mountains add to the beautiful views from Foel y Geifr.

What are Hewitts and Nuttalls?

Foel y Geifr is listed as a Hewitt and a Nuttall. These are special lists for hillwalkers and climbers in the British Isles.

  • A Hewitt is a hill in England, Wales, or Ireland that is at least 2,000 feet (about 610 meters) high and has a drop of at least 30 meters (about 98 feet) on all sides.
  • A Nuttall is a mountain in England or Wales that is at least 2,000 feet (about 610 meters) high.

Being on these lists means Foel y Geifr is a recognized and often-climbed peak for those who enjoy exploring the Welsh mountains.
